Compass Activity

You and your cronies are English crusaders who have been caught by the defending Muslims doing reconnaissance for an assault.

They lock you in a cell with a small window. You can hear the guards just outside the wall and can tell by their pattern of duty when there will be enough time for you to get out the window and escape. The problem is that you all were blindfolded when being placed in the cell. You don’t have a clue about which direction you came. You only know you have to flee in a northerly direction because your colleagues are to the North of the holding area preparing for the assault.

You and your group must get to them. Many people will die unless you get them the information you have. Your reconnaissance knowledge will greatly assist them in the assault.

You and your fellow soldiers wait for morning in order to see where the sun rises to give you a clue about which way is North, but it turns out to be a cloudy day.

What do you do? How will you find your direction? Between you and your group you have only the following items to help you in your quest to find North and the attacking army:

bulletA small plastic dish
bulletA small amount of water
bulletA piece of cork
bulletA sewing needle
bulletA magnet
bulletA little bit of knowledge about some new bit of technology called … a compass

Using the items at your disposal, find magnetic North with your group. Record your results on a piece of paper, being sure to explain your conclusion and/or possible solutions. Remember: many lives are at stake.
